Pick up is not mandatory and many rugs can be cleaned in home without removing them.
Wool carpets often take color aggressively and most stains can be removed but it is always possible that some colored stains could be permanent. We often advise clients up front if we suspect there will be a persistent problem with spots on an area rug.
